John Mccain Senator John McCain, a Republican from Arizona, has had a long and distinguished career in both the military and in politics. A United States Naval Pilot and Captain who received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, and Purple Heart, McCain then moved onto the House of Representatives and Senate (Biographical Data for John S. McCain has endeavored to fulfill his dream by creating a web site devoted to his campaign, giving numerous speeches, running many television ads and appearing on various television programs. An integral part of his campaign has been to reach the less reliable, harder to attrac t youth vote. America's youth today is disenchanted with the political system. Two-thirds of young Americans don't vote, primarily because they don't feel candidates are addressing issues important to them (Cox, Finklestein). According to a Youth Survey conducted by Project Vote Smart, voters aged 18-24 think school shootings and kids with guns, crime and violence, poverty and unemployment, corrupt government and illicit drug sales are the five most important problems facing America today (General Population). Meanwhile, candidates spend the majority of time discussing issues such as Social Security, taxes and abortion, which are not of as much concern to young voters. John McCain has actively sought out 18-24 year olds, the group collectively known as Generation Y. The Arizona Senator reached out to young voters with a message of personal honesty and government reform, drawing large crowds on college campuses in New Hampshire and South Carolina (Sullivan, McCain Gets). McCain has addressed some of the issues that concern America's youth today. The Senator does not support gun bans but does promote effective measures that keep firearms out of the hands of criminals, children, and the mentally incompetent(Cox, Finklestein). Corruption in government, particularly the role that money plays in politics, is a main issue of McCain's campaign and is being addressed through his strategy to ameliorate campaign finance. McCain has led the fight in Congress to reform campaign finance, especially soft money contributions which are large donations to national parties from individuals, corporations and labor unions that are not susceptible to regulation. McCain, along with Democratic candidate Bill Bradley, is credited as being the first to discuss reforming the campaign finance system (Cox, Finklestein). In the Youth Survey conducted by Project Vote Smart, respondents aged 18-24 chose the World Wide Web as their most useful information source (General Population). McCain is utilizing the power of the Internet to build mailing lists, solicit contributions and to attract young voters, many of whom are more acquainted with computer networks than political networks (Sullivan, Virtual). The Internet has proved to be an important organizing tool in McCain's campaign. Young people interested in becoming involved in his campaign will find a web site that devotes an entire page to each youth organization in each state. Pages consist of upcoming events, biographical information, photographs, links and contact information, putting various aspects of McCain's campaign at the very technologically advanced fingertips of America's youth (Students 4 Dole). Each page varies; some simply list contact information, while others have inspirational letters from McCain supporters and extravagant graphics l ike waving state flags. Later having issues at home he was kicked out and lived on the streets for a year during his high-school years,feeling desperate Danny started getting into trouble like stealing cars so he could have a roof over his head at night.Very quickly Danny knew that his mental health was too much to handle on his own but did not know who he could seek help from. Feeling alone and lost at 22 now shutting himself out of his friends lives and isolating himself do his friends would not see how much pain he was in danny was finding it hard to   even maintain friends because of how problematic his mental illnesses were becoming. Remaining silent about his pain and problems Danny attempted suicide then shortly after he turned to crime and went to prison for years. There he finally felt that he could express his mental health concerns without feeling judged, his friends that made did not push shame him for having these disorders but were thankful that he was still alive. Creating a very strong support group relating to other prisoners about feeling alone and scared when you feel that youre helpless when trying to help yourself, this was a very big step in Danny accepting himself and wanting to get more help for his illness â€Å" I would talk to them about what happened to me and how I suffered†¦ it seemed that they understood more, they knew how I felt†. After getting out of prison Danny met a friend that related to him more than his friends he made while being locked up, Dannys new friend gave him contact information for his psychiatrist. Just after three months from receiving help and guidance from his psychiatrist Danny began to see and feel a change â€Å" he told me that there are ways to change. You can goto any heights you want if you work at it. I still suffer from depression, but now my actions are different. I n o longer want to hurt myself or others.†   Danny along with continuing with his therapist and in his take keeping on his medication he has new purpose and a new outlook on life â€Å" Its possible. Your life can change, simple, just by talking with someone†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Danny wants people go know that they are worth it and never look at it any differently.   According to the American foundation for suicide prevention (AFSP) in this country alone suicide is the 10th leading cause of death, nearly 44,965 Americans die each year to suicide and for every suicide there 25 attempts. A case study was done by   in 2002 right after the tragic terrorist attack on the World trade center. There were over 2,180 participants in that lived in New York for this study,to understand the difference if any on mental health between races. They found that minorities did not have a greater chance of having a mental illnesses such as PTSD but did contract more severe symptoms than the whites. However also finding that other illnesses like panic attacks are twice as likely to be had by Puerto Ricans and African Americans, they explained this to be due to the fact that these races face more decriminalization. Finding that minorities such as Hispanics and Pacific islanders are more likely to report their negative life experiences but receive lower levels of soci al support than whites. There is very little to no support showing that one specific race or ethnicity suffers worse from mental health issues than the other, if we all suffer from mental health why is it still such a taboo for most cultures? Taking into consideration the Hispanic culture, mental illnesses is usually seen as something thats not even real or at least not a big deal. In an article by the Cleveland Clinic discussing how to overcome this taboo of mental health in the Latino community psychiatrists Diana Lorenzo MD says â€Å"Mental health issues have a stigmaMany Latinos would prefer to ignore these conditions over talking about them openly.† I do agree that it does have a stigma, but stating that Latinos prefer to ignore problems rather than discussing them does not seem accurate. In a article written by each mind matters a website providing awareness and information on mental health topics they present a Surgeon General report showing that 20% of Latinos showing psychological distress goto a physician while 10% goto a actual mental health specialist and when they received support about their mental health they utilize services more than non- Latinos. Its not that the Latino community does not want to help one another with these challenges being mental illness, it could very possibly be they just dont know how to or feel the shame for wanting to get information to get help on these issues. This may be a language barrier or the negative connotations it has, even when Latinos speak out help many of them do not receive care or treatments needed.   Mental health America reports that 17.8% of the U.S population are estimated to be Hispanic or Latino and of those over 15% had a diagnosable mental illness in the past year. Suicide rates for middle aged white men is more common than other genders and races but now at 15.1% of suicide attempts by teenage Latinas the numbers are growing fast,only 9.8% of their white peers, both female and male attempt taking their own life as teenagers. It is reported by salud america that this is higher than non-stop Hispanic white females and Hispanic males. Being that more than 1 out of 4 Latina high-schoolers report that they have thought about committing suicide. Awareness for mental health should start in the home, in the form of conversations and services, 8% of Latinos say their children have some for of access to mental health services opposed to 14% of white peers. How can we help people that feel they cant speak out with the problems they have especially regarding mental health? Understanding that we all battle with some form of mental health illness would be a good start, praising one another for reaching out to get help instead of shaming. If you take anything away from this let it be this mental health help and awareness takes many forms, talking to close friends and family, a therapist or psychiatrist even some schools have mental health services or any outreach programs online. Effect of Colours on Blood Pressure ABSTRACT This project was designed to determine the effect of different colours on blood pressure. A total of 24 subjects were required to look at specific colour for 2 minutes. Their respective blood pressure was measured respectively before and after each experiment. Time interval of 3 minutes after each measurement was set up to ensure blood pressure falls back to normal value before the next colour exposure. Friedman test was carried out to test the data and this led to the rejection of null hypothesis. To conclude, there was sufficient evidence from the statistical testing to suggest that different colours in our daily life can affect our blood pressure. RESEARCH AND RATIONALE Colour is perceived by human eyes when different wavelengths composing white light are selectively interfered by matter.1c Humans can see colours due to the cones present mainly in the middle of our retina and a few on the periphery.1a Each eye contains six million cones with pigment that is sensitive to either red, green or blue.1b Sensation of light and visual sharpness are created through transmission of high levels of light intensity.1a Colour with wavelengths between that of primary colours stimulates a combination of cones. Statistical analysis showed that there is a significant difference in the effect of different colours on blood pressure. Red and yellow increases blood pressure, blue decreases blood pressure while green and black have fluctuated stabilising effect. This proved that it the effects of colours are biological and not merely due to psychological effect or experimental error. From the table we could conclude that yellow showed greater increase in blood pressure with a higher mean and median of 11.54 and 10.50 respectively. However, it had results over a big range of data from minimum increase of +4 to a maximum increase of +29 and a highest standard deviation of 5.93 compared to other colour, which limited the creditability of the data. By plotting a box plot, we could determine that +29 is an outlier. Psychological effects that have been suggested for this colour are anger provoking and activeness. Nevertheless, compared to yellow colour, a significant increase was also noted for red colour. But, red colour recorded shown a smaller range of data, and hence, smaller value of standard deviation, which made the data more reliable than the yellow colour. Furthermore, it was also interesting to note that the box plot of red colour was positively skewed with more people showing greater increase than the median. Red colour is more commonly associated with excitement and awareness of danger. Blue colour, which is always linked to sadness and calmness, showed a neutral box plot with no skewing of data on the other hand. It was more concentrated with most people showed decrease between -3.00 and -7.00. Therefore, it could be concluded that blue decreases our blood pressure. The range of data is also smaller than that of yellow colour. Green colour, a colour of stability, showed a positively screwed data of a mean of -0.17. Therefore, the effect of green is hard to be explained and might have slightly opposing effects under different circumstances. The differences and fluctuations of data could be due to cultural association and personal experience as well. Some fluctuation could be due to experimental error. Last but not the least, three outliers were calculated for black colour. Though having a very small inter-quartile range, black colour portrayed the second largest standard deviation (5.52). Black is suggested to be a neutral colour. Yet, a few subjects displayed a very high increase of blood pressure when exposed to black colour. It could be due to sleepiness, or fear of dark environment. Although the real scientific mechanisms of colours on our body are still undefined, but effects of colour are not directly psychological. EVALUATION OF EXPERIMENT Limitation Firstly, the subjects were of different cultural backgrounds and could have different life experiences that lead to change of mood and blood pressure when subjected to a certain colour which links to their past. Results obtained could be due to personal psychological effect instead of the pure biological effect of colour. Furthermore, digital blood pressure monitor was used. Small fluctuations of data could occur and might be assumed to be change of blood pressure. Besides, the subjects involved in this investigation were of small sample and involved merely college-aged students. It was not an exact representative of the true population of general-aged students. Limited availability of participants also occurred as the students tested were only from one college. Moreover, a humans feelings are not controllable. Subjects might feel nervous or bored throughout the whole experiment even though a briefing was given beforehand. Sources of error and ways to improve The blood pressure might not be measured at exactly 2nd minute as there could be slight delay or increase of reaction time. In order to increase the validity and reliability of the result, reaction time is trained before the experiment. Second data cannot be taken as this will influence the time of measuring and also time of exposure to colours. Blood pressure of normal humans also varied slightly throughout the day due to hunger, sleepiness and also a full meal. Therefore, all the experiments should be carried out within the period of 2p.m. to 5p.m. to prevent fluctuations of data. Besides, the colour intensity exposed to the subjects might have varied a little bit due to the surrounding light although clothes were used. The environment could have changed throughout the experiments as not all the subjects data are collected in one day. Fluctuating weather, sunlight intensity, temperature and humidity all might influence the mood and feeling of subjects which indirectly affect the reliability of the experiment. Human are complex subjects. The experiment should be carried out in a constant air conditioned room with the same fluorescent light so that minimum changes of colour intensity can be achieved. Further research Study can also be done on the effect of colour on mood, stress, work performance and memory. As colour can affect our blood pressure, it might affect our daily mood and performance. Therefore, a good choice of colour in our surroundings can be made in order to achieve greater and better performance. A comparison between effects of colour on different gender can also be made as males and females have different anatomy. Hence, there could be interesting findings. CONCLUSION There is significant difference between the effects of different colours on blood pressure. Red colour and yellow colour increase blood pressure while blue colour decreases blood pressure. Statement of Purpose It is my absolute pleasure to write this statement in order to show my interests,and to show my inspiratons,wishes,experience and career,goals. It was early 1998,when I was in class six,my maternal uncle established an automobile workshop which was only two minutes far on foot from our home. All kinds of overhauling and body repairing work were done in the workshop. I used to go to the shop almost everyday during coming from my school. In 1214 a charter of liberties, this involves the punishment of the townspeople, contains the first reference to a chancellor (Leff 79). The year 1214 marked the inauguration of a chancellor at Oxford University, whose name is Robert Grosseteste (Leff 79). The chancellor at Oxford symbolized something different than at its rival Paris University. At Oxford the chancellor stands for self-rule because, he was in the society of masters. While at Paris the chancellor was not in the society of masters so he would symbolize alien rule. Probably one of the earliest known teachers is Theobald Stampenisis in 1117 (Leff 77).
